Cardiac Surgery
Cardiac Surgery at Winthrop, consistently ranked at the top in New York State Department of Health reports, is a leading Cardiac Surgery Program.
The HealthGrades® Distinguished Hospital Award places Winthrop among the top 5 percent of all acute-care hospitals in the country...an elite group that achieves notably high levels of performance across service lines, including cardiac services and coronary bypass surgery. This prestigious recognition further underscores the Hospital's reputation as a leading heart surgery center with exemplary patient outcomes.
Cardiac surgery patients receive a seamless continuum of care. From admission...to the OR...to the post-operative intensive care and step-down units, our goals are always the same: to provide Winthrop heart surgery patients with the highest caliber of care while the referring physicians are kept abreast of and involved in their progress...every step of the way.
The perception that the best care for serious, complex illnesses is available only in New York City is a myth. For incomparable care, physicians can refer their heart surgery patients close to home, family and their practice...at Winthrop, in Mineola, on Long Island. We believe that proximity to both family and the patient's personal physician is critical to a speedy and full recovery.
Referral Center of Choice
Referring physicians become integral members of the heart surgery team with the first phone call when they are consulted about their patient's surgical preparedness. Patients are fully informed about the road ahead and the milestones that will mark recovery. More importantly, the already established channels of communication opened with their personal physicians keep them informed as each milestone is reached.
Upon admission each patient's preoperative attention and evaluation set the tone for what will be an exceptionally effective hospitalization. Each member of the cardiac surgical team-the surgeon, cardiac anesthesiologist, perfusionist, physician's assistant, cardiovascular nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, intensive care nurse, physical therapist and inhalation therapist-visits with the patient. Together, they form a constant, reassuring presence from day one through discharge and after, when indicated.
Intraoperative care focuses on proactive operating room procedures. With transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) to monitor our technique continuously, we can evaluate repairs before the chest is closed so that unexpected developments can be detected and corrected before they lead to potential postoperative complications. The most minute clinical adjustments can be made quickly by our surgical team, which works in perfect sync, integrating experience, skill and instinct.
Postoperative attention brings full circle our seamless, round-the-clock continuum of care. The surgeon contacts the primary physician immediately after surgery to detail and discuss post-surgical specifics. Patients and families are informed about realistic expectations for a speedy recovery and told how they can support and enhance the recuperative process. Every resource available to the cardiac surgical team is utilized to help the patient's heart heal faster.
A Strong Team-
With Experience, Skill & Sensitivity
The core of Winthrop's Cardiac Surgery Program is a cohesive team of exceptionally skilled and experienced professionals, who deliver advanced, innovative care with unparalleled sensitivity. They don't just repair the heart and move on. They manage patients throughout their hospitalization with diligence and dedication, always bearing in mind the critical role of the primary physician.
The core of Winthrop's Cardiac Surgery Program is a cohesive team of exceptionally skilled and experienced professionals: cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, physician's assistants, cardiovascular nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, intensive care nurses, physical therapists and inhalation therapists. They deliver advanced, innovative care with unparalleled sensitivity. They don't just repair the heart and move on. They manage patients throughout their hospitalization with diligence and dedication, always bearing in mind the critical role of the primary physician.
Heading the team are the cardiac surgeons. Their surgical mastery and extensive knowledge of medicine combine to provide the most comprehensive patient care and create a meaningful dialogue with referring physicians.
The cardiac anesthesiologists are specially trained and certified in cardiac anesthesiology and cardiac patient management. They understand the unique respiratory and other complex needs of heart patients - not just during surgery, but before and after.
The clinical perfusionists fine tune the patient's blood flow, monitor metabolic demands and regulate body temperature during surgery. With highly sophisticated, extracorporeal technology (heart-lung machine) and keen sensitivity to the slightest change in the body's rhythms, they do everything necessary to optimize heart muscle preservation and blood conservation.
The cardiac surgical physician's assistants are registered PAs certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Available round-the-clock, they provide physicians with 24-hour, seven-day-a-week coverage of their patients. They are also invaluable liaisons for surgeons, consulting physicians and ancillary professionals, as well as patients, families and primary physicians.
The cardiovascular nurse specialists, certified as Critical Care Registered Nurses, orchestrate the entire patient care process. They educate patients and families and serve as the universal link between surgeon, patient, family and private physician from admission through, and after, discharge. Additionally, they provide technical assistance to the staff cardiac nurses and teach them the latest techniques in cardiac care.
The cardiothoracic nurse practitioners, specialize in pre- and post-operative management of cardiac and thoracic surgical patients. Available seven (7) days a week to cover these patients, they serve as liaisons for surgeons, consulting physicians and ancillary professionals, as well as patients, families and primary physicians. Nurse practitioners conduct pre-admission testing and management of patient care throughout hospitalization.
Individually, each team member plays a vital, specialized role in the cardiac surgery process. Together, they form the nucleus of Winthrop's Cardiothoracic Surgery Program...a program of uncompromising quality and expertise.
